In terms of story, the film departs from the comic book canon in several ways. For one, Ra's al Ghul is not Batman's only nemesis in the movie. He is also pitted against Carmine Falcone, a crime lord who terrorizes Gotham City. Another significant change is that Wayne does not don thematically link his villains to fear, as he does in the comics. Instead, his rogues gallery is a reflection of the various traumas he experienced during his childhood.

In Bob Kane's original art for the character, Batman's cape and cowl were gray and black respectively. This was later changed to blue and gray for the comics. The most notable change though, is the yellow oval around the bat symbol on his chest which was added by Kane himself.
